Aman Mann, a postdoctoral fellow in Erkki Ruoslahti’s lab, and Sara Gelino, a graduate student in Malene Hansen’s lab, have been elected as SBSN’s Executive Committee Chairpersons for 2012, as determined in a vote at the committee’s monthly meeting on January 9th.

SBSN will open the 2012 President’s Lecture Seminar Series at Sanford-Burnham with a seminar given by distinguished scientist Mina J. Bissell, Ph.D. on “The importance of tumor microenvironment in initiation, promotion, and therapy of cancer” Jan. 10, 2012 at 12 p.m. PST (3 p.m. EST) at the Fishman Auditorium. Doctoral students and postdocs from Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and UCSD are invited to attend a free screening of “The PHD Movie,” a film by the makers of Piled Higher and Deeper, a Web comic strip that parodies life as a graduate student. SBSN’s Annual Halloween Party
Sanford-Burnham Science Network’s Annual Halloween Costume Party was held in a spooked out Chairmen’s Hall at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute on Oct. 29. The festive celebration, sponsored by Sanford-Burnham Science Network and UCSD Post-Doctoral Association, included costume prizes for adults and children, catered Indian food by Punjabi Tandoor, a kids’ bounce house, music, dancing and drinks.

SBSN Poster Symposium 2011: A Day of Science
The 10th Annual SBSN Poster Symposium and Vendor Show – Sanford-Burnham Science Network’s flagship event — was held October 7, 2011 at the Bahia Resort Hotel in Mission Bay. The day’s programming featured scientific talks, including a keynote address by Dr. Connie Eaves, founder of the Terry Fox Laboratory. The afternoon poster session had 70 entries from Sanford-Burnham postdocs and graduate students, presenting their recent accomplishments and future research aims across all levels and disciplines.
